Omkareshwar in Madhya Pradesh
Omkareshwar, a temple dedicated to Lord Shiva, is one of the 12 revered shrines of Shiva's Jyotirlinga. It is located on an island called Mandata or Shivapuri on the river Narmada. It is said that the shape of the island resembles the ॐ symbol .
The prominent white shikhara atop the Sri Omkar Mandatha Temple is a relatively recent addition to the compact building complex. Below it, the pillars or mandapas of the decorated hall testify to the antiquity of the temple.
We came to Omkareshwar on Mahashivaratri, the holiest day dedicated to Lord Shiva, so we didn't visit the temple for darshan as the crowd was huge. We managed to get decent accommodation about 20 km away and next morning visited Omkareshwar. The crowd thinned out, but there were still enough of us to say goodbye from afar.
You will be taken on a photo tour through the streets of Omkareshwar to the temple and its surroundings to get an idea of the festive atmosphere there.
