Mysore Ahoy for Dasara 2010!
It happened in Bengaluru just before the 400th anniversary of Mysore Dasara celebrations in 2010. I decided to go to Mysore which is only about 3 hours away. My in-laws in Bangalore were instrumental in booking a room for us in a villa in Mysore, which is a feat in itself given the severe shortage of rooms available during the festivities. The journey from Bangalore was amazing! Bangalore looks like a banana plantation. They have a tradition of tying banana plants to all vehicles for Dasara! Even the two-wheeler has two banana trees on each side! Banana plants are sold along the road! We left randomly at 10:30 and since it was a short drive, we decided to visit a few places on the way. First stop is Nimishamba Temple, just before Ranganthitu Bird Sanctuary. The location of this temple and its surroundings are very beautiful. There is a river flowing Coracles where you can ride horses or just swim, as well as pay your respects to Goddess Nimishamba. Garlands of lemons are worshiped along with coconuts, bananas and flowers of the goddess. Some fresh fruit and vegetables are also available for purchase. Then, as the sky darkened, we continued our journey to the Ranganthittu Bird Park. if you want to drink Take the boat, remember to buy a ticket at the entrance where you bought your entrance ticket to avoid disappointment as there are no tickets for sale once you enter the park. It is undoubtedly a beautiful place. We took a short walk and ran back to our car when the rain god decided to use his power to cool off. It was around 5pm when we arrived at the MTR Deluxe Lodge in the heart of Mysore just after State Bus Station. The rooms were small but clean and comfortable for the price (900/- for a double + taxes) which must have been a trip due to the festival. After perking up, he decided to go to the palace and sneak into the atmosphere. The whole city lit up and there were people of all shapes, sizes and colors pushing each other. The policeman controlling the crowd was very polite and patiently answered all our questions about the festival without losing his cool. After walking around the palace, we were hungry and visited Hotel Dasaprakash, one of them. Mysore's oldest restaurant for a nice simple South Indian thali meal. The next morning is the day of the famous elephant and float parade which moves from the palace to the Banimantap grounds about 5 kilometers away. We could have bought tickets to sit in the seats outside the palace, but if we didn't choose that, we would be locked in one seat for the entire show. We also sat in the front row a few hours before the parade started. We thought we would check out Mysore in the morning as the parade would start at 2pm. So after a delicious breakfast of aloo parathas with pudina chutney and dill pickle, we hit the road. Purohit Restaurant located directly below our cabin. Yes, not idli dosas! Still filtering the chapter! Don't miss it because the parathas are delicious and the tea refreshing. We have had quite a few doses of idli for the past week so this is a welcome change. First we went to the palace to see it during the day and then we went to the parade route See how people booked their positions and got comfortable!

Return to the restaurant and have a North Indian thali for lunch. Take a short break in your room and enjoy the excitement created by the parade. People took every place possible, including the trees! The excitement was palpable as the lead elephant appeared fully clothed, followed by several more followed by buoys representing different cultures. We were people watchers and after a while we went back to our rooms and watched part of the parade 'live' on TV as we prepared to return to Bangalore. It's good to be there. An unforgettable event!
