Rajasthan rolling - 8 (Mandawa)
In the heart of the Shekhawati region of Rajasthan lies the quaint little town of Mandawa, known throughout the state for its forts and havelis.
It took us 3 hours to get to Mandawa from Bikaner which is 190 km away. Road, as usual, good.
After arriving in Mandawa, we took a narrow road to the Mandawa Heritage Hotel.
order. That's very cool. The frescoes on the walls and the vaults are impressive. Our rooms are also decorated in an ethnic style. We had a delicious lunch and went to explore Mandawa's "Open Art Gallery".
The medieval fort of Mandawa, founded in the 18th century, dominates the town with its painted arches.
The door is decorated with Lord Krishna and his cows. Chohan and Ladia Havelis and a walk with Saraf
Havelis are some of the best examples of haveli in the region.
There are some interesting paintings on the eastern exterior wall of Bisidhar Nevatiya Haveli: a boy talking on the phone and a European woman in a chauffeur-driven car. Gulab Rai Ladia Haveli has some kinky erotic pictures.
The historic town of Mandawa served as a center for the caravan trade from the Middle East and China. In 1755, the Rajput ruler Thakur Nawal Singh bought the Mandawa fort and the city walls, which were built to protect the trading posts.
The know-how of the Rajputs is demonstrated by Goenka Double Havelis. The haveli is decorated with portraits of royalty, traditional Rajasthani women and religious motifs. Hanuman
Prasad Goenka Haveli made religious murals such as Lord Shiva riding Nandi and Dewa Indra riding an elephant. Jhunjhunwala Haveli is famous for its gold leaf and intricately carved and painted ceilings.
painted walls. The Murmuria Haveli also features carved arches, lattice windows and intricate designs. Apart from traditional frescoes and frescoes, Murmuria Haveli also has contemporary paintings such as Jawaharlal Nehru on a horse with the national flag. Mohanlal Saraf Haveli, Chohowani Haveli, Bhagchandika Haveli, Gulab Rai Ladia Haveli, Lakshmi Narayan Ladia Haveli and Newtiya Haveli are some other major haveli in Mandawa.
We read a lot about Monica's restaurant in Mandaue where we decided to have lunch. We entered the restaurant along a dimly lit narrow street and walked into a completely empty restaurant. Again, like most restaurants in Rajasthan, the food caters to continental tastes. Although we asked for spicy food, we tried the sweet chicken tikka masala. Although this restaurant has very good reviews on Trip Advisor, it does not measure up to Indian tastes.
We went to our haveli for a good nights sleep and left for Jaipur the next morning.
