For those who consider Lonavala a pass, go the extra mile to Lohagarh (Iron Fort), 20 km from Lonavala.

After crossing Lonavala, head to Walwan and then ask for directions to Nangargaon, Bangarwadi and Lohgadwadi respectively (there are no signs). Lohagadwadi is Lohagarh at the foot of the hill.

Here you can park your car and walk a short distance of about 500 steps.

Lohagarh has a long history, ruled by different dynasties at different times: the Satavahanas, Chalukyas, Rashtrakutas, Yadavas, Bahmanis, Nizamshahis, Mughals, and Marathas. Shivaji captured it in 1648 but was forced to hand it over to the Mughals in 1665 through the Treaty of Purandar. Shivaji recaptured the fort in 1670 and used it to store wealth.

Historical records show that during the late Peshwa period, Nana Phadnavis (1742-1800 AD) built various structures in the fort, such as a large tank and a well.

On the western side is a long narrow wall-like fortified ridge, Vinchukata (meaning scorpion tail in Marathi) because of its shape. It was used to closely follow enemies and their movements.

You can go to Lonavala by train from Mumbai. The next stop on the route from Lonavla to Pune is Malavli. There are several domestic trains running between Lonavala and Pune. You can take any. You can take any of these places in Pune.

From the Malauli railway station, the fort is 9 km away and people walk to the fort. If you take the easy way, the Baja caves are on the way to Lohagarh. This hike is especially popular with hikers during the monsoons. It is a simple and easy walk, and the distance from Malawi Station to Vaje Gav takes about 20 minutes. The distance between Malavli and Lohagadwadi can be covered in 2-2.5 hours.
