Ujjain in Madhya Pradesh - Travel Time Article

Ujjain in Madhya Pradesh

I drove an hour from Indore to Ujjain and boarded a cab near the Mahakaleshwar Temple.

Since we only had one day in Ujjain, we decided to hire a guide recommended by the host.
Our first visit was the Kal Bhairavi Temple, famous for offering libations to the presiding deity.

The temple This temple is believed to have been built by King Bhadesen on the banks of the Shipra river.

The dog is the vehicle of Kala Bhairava and looks after the deity parked outside. Apparently, the dog was also worshipped, as many of the devotees in the past were hunters who were always accompanied by their faithful dogs.

The road leading to the temple is lined with shops selling baskets offering offerings to Kalu Bhairava.

flowers, incense sticks and a bottle of liquor. The priest of the temple will open a bottle of alcohol and pour it

plate and bring it to the mouth of the god to eat. Fantastic experience!
After finishing the Kala Bhairava, we were taken to the Kaliyade Palace. It is also found on the banks of the Shipra River. This

the palace was destroyed by the Pindars (knights, robbers or collectors associated with the Muslim army in India and allowed to loot money) and rebuilt in 1920 by Madhav Rao Shindia. Unfortunately, it needs more restoration. Apparently, there are Persian inscriptions in one of the corridors of the palace, which reflect that Emperor Akbar and Jahangir visited the place.
Now it's time to visit Mahakaleshwar Temple which is the most famous temple in Ujjain. This temple

Dedicated to Lord Shiva, it has twelve Jyotirlingas. Visit http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mahakaleshwar_Jyotirlinga to know the history and mythology of this temple.

On our way back to the lodge we stopped at the Bada Ganesh Temple which also houses the Panchmukhi.

Hanuman.
Ujjain is the center of Jantar Mantar (ie

an observatory with instruments to measure the time and position of the planets). It was built in 1725 when Jai Singh was the governor of Malwa under the Mughal emperor Muhammad Shah .
